Professional Teeth Cleanings

Professional Teeth Cleanings

Among the very large number of things your mom was right about, the importance of keeping your teeth clean ranks right up there. Leaving food residue on and in between your teeth is a recipe for dental disaster. That’s why professional teeth cleanings are crucial. Even if you’re the most conscientious brusher/flosser in the world, you can’t get everything your diet leaves behind. That’s where regular dental hygiene visits, at least twice a year, featuring a professional-level cleaning come into the dental health equation.

Why Professional Cleanings Matter

When a professional dental hygienist cleans your teeth, that professional uses tools that go far beyond what even top-of-the-line electric toothbrushes and water-flossers can do for you at home. Part of it is the strength of professional equipment, part of it is knowing just what to look for, and part of it is the angle from which a professional hygienist can approach your teeth — put simply, she or he can see and reach things that you just can’t while looking in your bathroom mirror.

What Happens During Your Visit?

Your hygiene visit begins with a thorough examination of your gum health and a check for any signs of concern. The hygienist then uses professional-grade instruments to remove built-up plaque and tartar from every surface and between teeth — areas your toothbrush cannot reach. Your teeth are polished to remove surface stains and leave them feeling smooth and clean. Dr. Daniel then reviews the findings and coaches you on any at-home habits worth adjusting. The whole process is quick, comfortable, and key to catching problems before they grow.

Removes Hidden Buildup

Professional tools eliminate plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing leave behind, protecting against cavities and gum disease.

Catches Problems Early

Every cleaning includes an exam. Small issues caught early mean simpler, less costly treatment before they become bigger problems.

Fresher Breath, Brighter Smile

Polishing removes surface stains and leaves your teeth noticeably cleaner and your breath fresher than any at-home routine can achieve.

Is a Cleaning Right for You?

Professional teeth cleanings are recommended for virtually every patient, regardless of how diligent you are at home. The American Dental Association recommends visiting the dentist at least twice a year for cleanings and exams. You may benefit from more frequent visits if you have a history of gum disease, are prone to tartar buildup, are pregnant, smoke, or have certain medical conditions like diabetes that affect oral health. If it has been more than six months since your last cleaning, now is the time to schedule.

Service FAQ's

For most patients, twice a year is the standard recommendation. However, patients with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, or certain health conditions may benefit from cleanings every three to four months. Dr. Daniel will recommend the right schedule for your specific situation.

Most patients find professional cleanings comfortable. If you have sensitive gums or it has been a long time since your last cleaning, you may notice some mild sensitivity. Let your hygienist know and they will adjust their approach. Numbing options are available if needed.

A professional cleaning removes surface stains from coffee, tea, and other foods, which can make your teeth look noticeably brighter. However, it is not the same as a whitening treatment. If you are interested in whitening, ask Dr. Daniel about our professional whitening options at your next visit.

There is no judgment here. We see patients at all stages and our first priority is getting you back to a healthy baseline. Longer gaps between visits sometimes mean a deeper cleaning is needed, but we will explain everything before we begin and make sure you are comfortable throughout.

Most dental insurance plans cover two preventive cleanings per year at little or no cost to you. We recommend checking with your provider before your visit. We also offer a membership plan for patients without insurance that includes cleanings and other preventive services.

A regular cleaning, also called prophylaxis, removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gum line and is appropriate for patients with healthy gums. A deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, goes further below the gum line to treat active gum disease. Dr. Daniel will assess which is appropriate during your exam.
